Holiday Home Museum Binsfeld – the modern and spacious holiday home with an integrated, private wellness area for groups of up to 20 people in Binsfeld, in the north of Luxembourg: perfect for your next holiday with your loved ones in the countryside! But how did this project come about?
In the year of the fall of the Berlin Wall in our German neighbours, the ‘Association of interests Binsfeld-Holler-Breidfeld’ acquired the property with the almost 200-year-old house ‘Bei Glesener’ in this country. The following 6 years were used diligently and highly motivated by mostly volunteers to carry out extensive renovation and remodelling work. The end result was impressive: an extension of the existing country museum ‘A Schiewesch’, 2 small holiday flats and a large stage accommodation that offered space for groups of up to 28 people. The large book of bookings was filled with mostly youth groups, confirming that it was the right decision to go down this route.
After a few years, however, the tide turned and, for financial reasons, the two holiday flats were rented out to socially disadvantaged people in order to guarantee a regular income. As bookings for the holiday accommodation were declining, a solution had to be found and the idea of a spacious holiday home with a certain standard was born. The large surviving shared rooms, known as ‘dormitories’, were to be turned into 10 double rooms, most of which had their own bathrooms and showers. With the increased privacy, comfort was also to be improved, so we opted for cosy box-spring beds. No sooner said than done! After the detailed planning, we immediately set about realising the project in 2021.
Despite the modern furnishings, the flair of the rustic building was not to be lost under any circumstances. That was probably the biggest challenge: as much comfort and modernity as possible, but without robbing the house of its centuries-old identity. For example, the traditional wooden beams have remained visible in the rooms above, to name just one example.
Special attention was also paid to the rustic flair when designing the entire holiday home. Next to the ‘Holiday Home Museum Binsfeld’ is the country museum ‘A Schiewesch’, also owned by the ‘Interessenverein Binsfeld-Holler-Breidfeld’. This museum presents the former village life of the region in an authentic way with a lot of heart and attention to detail. We pursued the same goal with the same passion in the ‘Holiday Home Museum Binsfeld’: despite the ultra-modern furnishings, the aim is to convey to our guests the life that used to prevail in the aforementioned house ‘Bei Glesener’. The aim was to achieve a mix between discreet and yet present, and let us cautiously say: we have succeeded quite well. Each room has its own theme (examples: at the blacksmith’s, in the children’s room, at school, …) and therefore also has its very unique charm. At this point, a big thank you to the local photography club ‘Camera on t’Our’, without whose support this would not have been possible. The deliberate placement of several objects from the extensive collection of the country museum ‘A Schiewesch’ perfectly rounds off the concept behind the rustic design.
In addition to the spacious, modern and charming double rooms with their own bathroom, our customers can look forward to an integrated and therefore private wellness area. A 4-person whirlpool, a sauna, an infrared cabin and several deckchairs invite you to relax and unwind. In addition, you can end the evening in convivial company at the hotel’s own bar or in the cosy lounge and fill it with all kinds of happy moments. When cooking together in the fully equipped kitchen, at the summer barbecue party on the large, private barbecue area or on the terrace with adjoining children’s playground, unforgettable holiday memories will write themselves.
Since the official opening in the presence of Mr Tourism Minister Lex Delles 2 years ago (June 2023), the ‘Holiday Home Museum Binsfeld’ has already enjoyed more than 2,500 overnight stays. Among them, our main target group ‘family with children’ is the most strongly represented. However, we are also seeing an increasing trend in other group constellations, such as work colleagues on a team-building trip or larger groups of friends. The marketing team is also focussing on hiking and cycling groups and initiating corresponding promotional measures. Geographically, most of our guests come from the Netherlands and Belgium, although bookings from German and Luxembourg groups are also on the increase. It is perhaps important to mention that there is no other holiday home of this high standard in the vicinity of the ‘Holiday Home Museum Binsfeld’.
